Trust helps jobless young people start in new role

We look for youngsters with 'a passion for care'

A minimum of 30 unemployed young people are getting the chance to make a career in the NHS as the Trust opens up places for a brand new role as an Assistant Support Worker.

The role helps nursing and occupational therapy staff to provide and maintain a high standard of care in wards.

LYPFT has created the opportunities under the Government’s Kickstart scheme. This provides six-month work placements for 16 to 24-year-olds on Universal Credit who are at risk of becoming long-term unemployed.

Claire Holmes, the Trust’s Director of Workforce and Organisational Development, said: “The Trust is looking for young people with the right attitude and aptitude with a passion for care. No prior experience or qualifications are needed so it’s a great entry opportunity to work for the NHS when we need you the most.”

“This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is keen to learn, and they will have a lot of help and pastoral support. We will recruit dedicated staff to ensure these young people will have all the support they need to train, learn and flourish.”

Cassie Good, Trust Strategic HR Resourcing Officer, added: “We appreciate they may never have worked before, or had a manager or worn a uniform, so it will be a big learning curve for many. We will work closely with everybody to ensure they are fully supported during their six-month placement. This provides them with a bespoke package of help to develop their employability skills and prepares them to apply for the role of our Apprentice Healthcare Support Worker when they successful complete the placement.”

The jobs are being advertised through Job Centres and the Trust will arrange interview days for applicants and tell them more about the areas in the Trust looking for assistant support workers –  the acute services, older people services, learning disabilities, liaison psychiatry and perinatal.

Alison Quarry, Matron in Male Service, Acute Inpatients, added: “As a Trust we welcome applicants from a multitude of backgrounds with a variety of experiences. We recognise everyone has something to offer and therefore through this scheme we can help people achieve their goals and potential.”

A combination of Government and Trust funding will pay for the placements.
