LYPFT significantly increases research studies

In the past year the Trust has made great improvements in the number of research studies undertaken, showing a 62% increase from 2014/2015, going from 21 to 34 studies in 2015/2016. This is the highest percentage increase compared to all NHS trusts across Yorkshire and the Humber.

This data comes from the 2015/2016 NHS Research Activity League Table, published earlier this month by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). The table provides a picture of how much clinical research is happening, where, in what types of trusts, and involving how many patients.

In addition, the number of people participating in LYPFT research studies more than doubled, going from 406 to 942 participants, the second highest percentage increase in the region.

Dr Tom Hughes, Associate Medical Director for Research said: “This is an outstanding achievement and such achievements can only result from effective team working.

“The trust’s Research and Development Team is extremely highly motivated and committed to enabling service users and carers, as well as clinicians, to participate in research.

“We know that service users benefit from involvement in research studies, with many experiencing better clinical outcomes as a result.”

“This is why it’s so important for Trusts like ours to continue to put research high on the agenda.”

The fantastic work of the Trust was picked up by several media outlets, including Yorkshire Post and Yorkshire Evening Post.

Alongside this print coverage, Head of Research and Development, Alison Thompson was approached for comment by Made in Leeds TV, the interview begins around 3:30 into the programme, with the general story on Leeds-wide research beginning at 0:50.

The NHS Research Activity League Table can be accessed from the NIHR website.
