Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Service
Referrals to the Leeds Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Service can only be made by a healthcare professional.
We are currently accepting new referrals that meet one of these criteria:
- People who have been turned away by other providers due to high risk.
- People currently receiving acute mental health services (including crisis services) within Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (LYPFT).
- Young people transitioning from the Child and Young People’s Mental Health Service who need adult secondary care.
For more information about making a referral under these exemptions, please visit our information for healthcare professionals page.

Can I access assessment and treatment from an alternative provider?
Yes, you can! If you live in England and are under the NHS, you have the legal right to choose your mental healthcare provider and team. You can find more information on the NHS UK website.
What should I do next?
Discuss your options with your GP. You might be able to get NHS-funded treatment from another provider if they have an NHS contract. Alternatively, you can choose private care, but make sure to talk to your GP about the details. You may need to pay for your medication privately rather than getting it prescribed by your local practice.
Why consider an alternative provider?
Using an alternative provider might give you quicker access to assessment and treatment. However, keep in mind that many alternative providers focus mainly on medication and might not offer psychosocial interventions. Psychosocial interventions address the psychological and social factors affecting mental health. It’s important to check with the provider what services they offer before getting a referral to avoid disappointment.
If people choose an alternative provider using the right to choose pathway, will they be removed from the NHS waiting list?
Yes. An assessment or treatment through the Right to Choose pathway replaces treatment under the NHS.
What else should I know?
Standards for assessment and treatment can vary between providers. If you get a diagnosis from an alternative provider, we will need to ensure it meets our minimum standards before starting or continuing treatment. We recommend giving your provider our locally agreed standards so they can ensure their assessment meets our requirements. These standards are currently being reviewed by the West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board and may change.

What if my clinical need changes since putting in my initial referral?
If you feel your circumstances have changed since you were first referred, please speak to your GP who can let us know about any change in your circumstances. We will then discuss this as a team to make a decision on priority.
