Christopher’s path into healthcare wasn’t a straightforward one. Initially drawn to creative industries like marketing and filmmaking, his career pivot came after caring for his late grandfather. That experience, combined with the diverse opportunities in healthcare, inspired him to reconsider his professional direction. He undertook extensive training, including character verification and care certificate courses across 15 disciplines, equipping him with the foundational knowledge to begin his journey.

To gain hands-on experience, Christopher worked in care homes across West Yorkshire between January 2023 and August 2024. These roles helped him apply his training in real-world settings, learning vital skills such as safeguarding, hygiene, first aid, and life support. He also picked up practical workplace lessons, like the importance of professionalism, asking questions when unsure, and maintaining boundaries.

On August 20, 2024, Christopher joined the NHS as a Health Support Worker at Red Kite View – CAMHS Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit. His responsibilities include safeguarding young people, supporting their therapy and nutrition, and working closely with multidisciplinary teams. For Christopher, the most rewarding moments are seeing young people successfully complete their rehabilitation and return home.

“Becoming a HCSW has been one of the most fulfilling decisions I’ve made. Every day brings a chance to help someone feel heard, cared for, and supported. If you’re thinking about it, go for it. You’ll grow more than you ever imagined.” — Christopher

His journey hasn’t been without challenges. From cultural adjustments to managing complex patient needs and coping with staff shortages, Christopher has faced demanding situations. One particularly memorable experience was escorting a young person home after discharge and receiving heartfelt gratitude from their family, a moment that affirmed the impact of his work.

Christopher encourages aspiring healthcare professionals to pursue allied health qualifications and gain basic healthcare training to improve their chances of joining the NHS.

Looking ahead, he hopes to specialise in mental health, advance to higher bands, and take on mentorship roles. His goals reflect a commitment to continuous learning, compassionate care, and contributing meaningfully to the NHS.

For anyone considering a career as a HCSW, Christopher’s experience shows that with the right mindset and support, it’s a path full of growth, connection, and impact.
