The 2024 NHS Staff Survey results are in!

The results of the 2024 NHS Staff Survey are now published, and we’re pleased to share that we’ve heard from more colleagues than ever before, a record 1,637 responses!

Our overall results are in line with national trends. Encouragingly, the ‘We are safe and healthy’ People Promise element showed a positive increase. However, other areas saw a decline, with the most significant drops in ‘We are recognised and rewarded’ and ‘Staff Engagement.’

Compared to our benchmark sector, Mental Health and Learning Disability and Mental Health, Learning Disability and Community Trusts, our substantive staff results were above average in key areas such as ‘Flexible Working’ and ‘Safe and Healthy’. Still, they fell below average in ‘Learning’ and ‘Team-working.’

A message to our staff from our Chief Executive Officer, Dr Sara Munro:

“I’m delighted to share that more colleagues participated than in the past decade. Despite the challenges since 2021, we’ve seen steady improvements in your working experience at LYPFT. However, this year’s results, like those of other Trusts, indicate a slight decline in workplace satisfaction, positioning us in the mid-range compared to our peers.

It’s no surprise that we aim to be better than average because I know how hard you work and how committed you are to our service users and communities. I’m pleased that the “We are safe and healthy” standards have improved for the third consecutive year, reflecting the positive impact on your well-being. Unfortunately, we’ve seen declines in other areas, such as reward and recognition, likely influenced by financial constraints. While our methods of showing appreciation have changed, we must continue to recognise and appreciate one another, and we will be seeking your views on how to do this effectively.”

Key areas for development

While we celebrate progress, we recognise there’s work to do:

We will continue to build a positive workplace culture by advancing initiatives that promote civility, respect, leadership, and team development, with a strong focus on appreciation and recognition across all teams.

We will foster inclusion and engagement for Bank staff by strengthening support and involvement to create a more inclusive and connected work environment.

We will enhance awareness and access to internal career development by promoting internal opportunities such as the Career Development Programme, Apprenticeships, and coaching, ensuring all staff can easily explore and progress in their careers.

Next Steps

We’re committed to turning these insights into action and supporting our teams to work together to improve service user care by:

Empowering teams with data – results will be accessible to all our staff via our internal business intelligence platform Echo.
Resources and Support – access to a range of resources aligned with the People Promise themes, designed to support both individuals and teams.
Developing Intention Plans – teams will lead the way in identifying and implementing meaningful improvements.
Leadership Commitment to Change – our senior leadership team has each made a Staff Survey Promise to drive meaningful improvements across the Trust.

Looking ahead, we await the national publication of our Bank workforce results in April 2025.

Thank you to our staff for sharing their voices and helping shape our future. Together, we’ll continue to make LYPFT a great place to work and receive care.
