#StaffedWards Phase 2: Staffing characteristics and patient safety

A data study looking at ward safety.

What is the study about?
This study is looking at whether the characteristics of staff and ward teams are linked to patient safety incidents on adult acute mental health wards in England. Safety incidents can include events such as falls, medication errors, aggression, self-harm, absconding, restraint-related injuries and other incidents that may affect patients or staff. The aim is to improve understanding of how staff and team factors may affect safety on mental health wards and to use this knowledge to make recommendations that could help mental health services provide safer care.

What is involved?
This study is looking at data only; there are no patients or staff being directly recruited to take part in this phase of the study. The researchers will prepare and anonymise data that has been collected in the previous 12 months from adult acute mental health wards. They will analyse the data to look for patterns and relationships between staffing characteristics and safety incidents.

Who can take part?
Participants will be:

  • Data only from those on an adult acute NHS/independent mental health wards in England.
