Research Hero of the Month – October 2025

This month's Research Hero is Jamie O’Neill

This month we’re focusing on how an important research project was carried out by a trainee doctor with minimal funding and resources. We’re sharing this story to show what can be achieved with enough determination and passion. Jamie was working in Asket Croft when he contacted R&D about an idea for a research project about reducing the dose of long-acting antipsychotics. From his previous experience of working on research with colleagues in a similar area, Jamie developed the Monitoring the Inter-Dose Interval for Long-acting Injectable Antipsychotics: pilot for the MIDILIA study.

With the help of some of the Trust’s charitable funding and some other small funding pots, Jamie recruited 10 service users into the study. He was supported by a couple of fellow trainee doctors to help identify participants. During this time, Jamie moved to another mental health trust, but this didn’t deter him from continuing to with the research.

Jamie showed great initiative and focus in his pursuit of this project. He also consulted the advice of our service user and carer group, HEER and took their comments into account.

He is now seeking funding to run a bigger trial so that he can continue to explore this important topic. We wish him the best of luck!

Jamie said:

“Having taken a fairly unorthodox route into research, I needed a lot of support and guidance to get my idea off the ground in the initial stages. The LYPFT R&D team, especially Sinead and Zara, were incredible in helping me develop the MIDILIA project and see it through to completion of the pilot phase. I’m really excited to keep working on MIDILIA over the coming years, and hope to build enthusiasm among my colleagues to join me in further research in psychopharmacology.”
