Research Hero of the Month – July 2025

Dr Mo Murtza contacted the team last year, eager to get involved in research.

We asked whether anyone on his caseload might be suitable for DIAMONDS, a study for people with type 2 diabetes and Serious Mental Illness. Mo not only considered his caseload, but collaborated with IT in searching for diabetes in Caredirector records across his service. We were so grateful for his efforts and commitment and invited him to be Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI) for the study, alongside our Principal Investigator, Dr Prakash Hosalli.

After becoming Co-PI on DIAMONDS, Mo was always available to sign off risk and safety concerns identified by R&D staff. When our DIAMONDS Research Assistants left, Mo went the extra mile again and fulfilled the role of ‘blind rater’, showing his dedication to delivering robust research and demonstrating what a Research Hero he is! Furthermore, Mo is using his language skills to enable a participant to continue taking part in Urdu, assisting us in our mission to make research inclusive and accessible. What a star!
Mo’s next clinical placement is in a different trust, but we’re thrilled that he’s going to continue his research time with us on a new commercial trial coming this autumn. We know he’ll be an asset to the study.

Mo says:

“Research excites me because it gives clinicians a voice in shaping the future of our patient’s care. Working with the R&D team on the DIAMONDS trial reminded me how vital evidence-based practice is in shaping better outcomes for our patients. I felt proud to contribute alongside such a dedicated and forward-thinking team!”
