Older People’s Acute Inpatient Services
Older People’s Acute Inpatient Services provide care and support for people with acute mental health needs including those with a diagnosis of dementia. This service is delivered in our inpatient unit, The Mount, a short walk from the centre of Leeds. Here at The Mount we complete holistic assessment and treatment over a 24-hour period. Although we are an older adult service our admission are not exclusively over 65 years of age. If anyone younger than 65 requires our service, we also work to meet there needs, this is primarily people who are clinically frail or with younger onset dementia.
The Mount consists of four primary wards. There are two wards for dementia assessment and treatment, ward 1 for males and has 14 beds and ward 2 for females with 15 beds. The dementia assessment service has 29 beds in total and can be accessed by any person with a diagnosis of dementia and (behaviours psychological symptoms of dementia) who needs a period of assessment and treatment.
The older adult acute mental health service runs across wards 3 and 4. There are 41 beds in total across these wards. Ward 4 is the female acute ward and has 21 beds ward 3 is the male acute bed and has 20 beds.
The Older People’s Acute Inpatient Services was inspected by the CQC earlier this year and was rated as requires improvement. Visit the wards for older people with mental health problems report for more information.
Referral information
Dementia wards
Dementia does not just affect people who are over 65. As a result of this, we often accept admissions of people who are younger but still require our specialist input. Our dementia assessment unit accept admissions from many different routes such as the intensive care homes treatment team, intensive home treatment team as well as liaison services within general hospitals. Admission to ward 1 and 2 can be voluntary alternatively, some people access our service through the mental health act.
Older acute Wards
The older adult acute mental health service is adaptive and vibrant, catering for the needs of people with all mental health conditions. The service is predominantly for people over 65 however, if someone is clinically frail and their specific care needs are more suitable to our specialism we will accept people under the age of 65.
The majority of our admissions are people who have become acutely unwell in their own homes and required assessment or treatment within our service. Admission on wards 3 and 4 can be voluntary if our service users are choosing to seek help; alternatively, some people access our service through the Mental Health Act
What happens after referral? Treatment plan
All service users will have an individualised assessment of their needs and risks associated with their diagnosis which assesses each person as an individual and looks at the persons holistic needs.
Within the service we create and adapt person-centred bio-psycho-social care plans to cover a persons’ individuals wants, wishes and needs. We have extensive involvement from the multidisciplinary team including occupational therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, registered nurses, Salt and physiotherapy to ensure everyone is able to access the treatment and support they require.
