Perinatal Mental Health Service
Introduction to the Service
The Leeds Perinatal Mental Health Service provides specialist community treatment and support to women experiencing significant mental health difficulties during pregnancy and for up to two years following a child’s birth.
We also provide, in-patient care at the Yorkshire and Humber Mother and Baby Unit, and preconception counselling for women at risk of becoming unwell during this period.
What are perinatal mental health problems?
Having a baby is one of the most incredible things you can do in your lifetime but sometimes both mums and dads can struggle with their mental health. This is perfectly normal.
Some women will experience a recurrence or exacerbation of previous mental health difficulties, and some women may experience mental health difficulties for the first time.
Depression, anxiety, troubling thoughts and feeling overwhelmed are all very common. Minor difficulties can be managed with additional family/social support, or through your GP or health visitor. More significant difficulties may benefit from a referral to our service.
It is rare but possible to become suddenly very unwell following childbirth with a condition known as postpartum psychosis.
Speak to your GP, midwife, health visitor, or mental health team if you are worried about your mental health, or, if you think a referral to our service would be helpful.
