Case Study - Ozioma’s experience of working as a health support worker at the Trust

My name is Ozioma Jeff Okoli, I work at The Mount, Ward 3 (older people inpatient service).

I started working here in March 2024, and my experience working as a health support worker has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. My deep desire to make a tangible difference in people’s lives initially drew me to this role. I have always been someone who thrives on helping others, and this role offered the perfect opportunity to combine that passion with meaningful work.

My journey into this field started when I cared for my late mother during a challenging time in her life. Watching the impact of compassionate and skilled support workers on her recovery inspired me to pursue this career. I realised how vital this role is in providing not just physical care but emotional reassurance to individuals and their families.

The human connection is what I enjoy most about being a health support worker. Every day is different, and each person I support has their own story, personality, and needs. Building relationships with patients and helping them achieve their goals—whether it’s regaining independence, improving their quality of life, or simply sharing a moment of laughter—is incredibly fulfilling.

I also love the variety that the role brings. From assisting with daily activities and providing companionship to supporting people through complex health challenges, the diversity keeps me motivated and constantly learning. Witnessing the positive changes in someone’s life because of my care reminds me why I chose this path.

Being a health support worker is not without its challenges. Still, it has taught me resilience, patience, and the value of kindness. It’s a role that continually pushes me to grow both personally and professionally, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

The best part of my job is seeing a patient admitted into our ward from day 1 and the day he walks out (discharged), the pride and joy of seeing the impact our service and care have made in helping him get better and go home to his family cannot be underestimated.

I love my ward in The Mount, my colleagues, and I have the best manager and nurses; these are great people to work with, and they make the job easy and fun even through the challenging times. I love working at this Trust and want to continue improving and growing my career here. I hope Leeds and York Partnership Foundation Trust will help healthcare support workers like me to continue our careers and grow in this Trust for a long time.
