VE Day: Celebrating the 75th anniversary indoors

This Friday, 8th May is VE Day which marks the day towards the end of World War Two when fighting against Nazi Germany in Europe came to an end.

This year is the 75th anniversary and while we may not be able to celebrate this event in the way we would have liked, there are still plenty of ways we can remember this occasion and those who fought for us.

Socially-distanced wreath-laying, a two-minute silence, a re-broadcast of Winston Churchill’s speech and an address from the Queen are among the national events taking place.  The official VE 75 website also has a timetable and dedicated toolkit you can use to hold your celebrations at home.

Our own Ward Olympics are also taking part in a themed paper plane making activity on Friday and we encourage our staff to take part on Twitter using #LYPFTOlympics to share their paper spitfires or any other activities they will be doing to honour the occasion.

VE Day timetable – national events

11am — Two-minute national silence to remember the declaration of victory and the end of the Second World War in Europe.

2.45pm – 3.45pm — BBC One will be showing the first of two special programmes to mark VE75, including an extract from Sir Winston Churchill’s victory speech delivered at 3pm on VE Day.

9pm — BBC One will show an Address by the Queen followed by a national doorstep rendition of Dame Vera Lynn’s “We’ll Meet Again”.

There are still plenty of ways you can get involved in the celebrations and show your support online and through social media so please get involved to mark this significant historical event.
