Could you be the next generation of health care staff?

An exciting new apprenticeship scheme has been launched that offers people the opportunity to gain hands-on experience working in the local NHS.

Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust provides a range of specialist mental health and learning disability services across Leeds and York.

The Apprentice Health Care Support Worker role involves learning on the job, providing support to service users with mental health issues and learning disabilities, being supported through continuous training and development while being paid.

Apprentices will complete a Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care and certificates in numeracy and literacy. On successful completion of the 14 month apprenticeship they will move into a permanent Health Care Support Worker position at the Trust.Picture of Matty Finch

Matty Finch, 21 from Leeds joined the Trust as an apprentice in 2015. His passion and commitment during his apprenticeship resulted in a permanent Health Care Support Worker in the Intensive Community Service where he now supports people living with acute mental health issues.

Matty said: “Whether you’ve just left school or are looking for a career change, I think apprenticeships are the best way to get a career in the NHS because you are trained, gain real-life experience and get the chance to work in different fields.

“An Apprentice Health Care Support Worker is a valuable role. You’re a main part of the team that work closely together and your role supporting the service users is as valuable as everyone else. You get to really make a difference.”

Although the exact role will vary day-to-day, apprentices will need to interact closely with service users, providing daily living support, such as assisting in the provision of safe environments, helping individuals maintain independence and inclusion, supporting the care of people who are in crisis or are experiencing problems managing their condition.
