Dial NHS 111 in West Yorkshire for 24/7 crisis mental health support
If you, or someone you’re worried about, needs urgent care or treatment for a mental health crisis dial 111 and select the mental health option.
The launch of the NHS 111 mental health option across West Yorkshire has made access easier to the range of existing services supporting people experiencing a mental health crisis.
People of all ages in West Yorkshire are able to access local crisis services by calling the familiar 111 number and selecting the mental health option. People experienced and trained in delivering mental health crisis support will listen to your concerns and help you get the support you need.
The NHS 111 number is a universal point of access for people experiencing mental health crisis, ensuring that anyone can call NHS 111 for themselves or someone else and have 24/7 access to the mental health support they need in the community.
What’s happening in Leeds
Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust’s (LYPFT) crisis service continues to operate and is one of the referral options available to mental health professionals when people dial 111, alongside services provided by West Yorkshire 24 hour mental health helpline, NightOwls, and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services.
However, as the NHS 111 number is now a universal point of access for people experiencing mental health crisis, LYPFT’s Single Point of Access (SPA) phone number (0800 183 1485) – operated by its crisis service – is now available only to professionals making urgent referrals. Colleagues in LYPFT’s crisis service can now focus on responding to calls from those most in need.
Callers familiar with the SPA number are asked to dial 111 for urgent care or treatment for a mental health crisis. Existing LYPFT service users are asked to continue to contact their key worker.
You may be familiar with other mental health services operating across Leeds. Established mental health helpline numbers for services such as the West Yorkshire 24-hour mental health helpline (0800 183 0558), Leeds CAMHS (0800 953 0505) and NightOwls (0800 148 8244), will continue to be open to the public.
If you need urgent help, you can also find a range of support on the Mindwell website. NHS 111 is not an emergency service. People should dial 999 in a mental health emergency.
GPs and Primary Care Colleagues
The SPA number is still available to GPs and other health and care professionals making urgent referrals.
They can still speak to a member of our Crisis Resolution Service by calling 0800 183 1485. This number operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
All members of the public who call 111 will pass through the Interactive Voice Recording (IVR). Anyone calling from Leeds will be patched through to the West Yorkshire Mental Health Helpline who will then speak to the caller.
They will:
- Provide emotional support,
- Triage need – if face to face assessment within 4hrs is needed they will instruct Crisis Resolution to provide this,
- If referral to any other non-urgent service is needed they will complete the SPA referral form available on the LYPFT website and send it to the LYPFT referrals inbox (managed by SPA administrators).
