Congratulations to Rachael, our Star Award winner

Rachael Walker, Charge Nurse at the Mother and Baby Unit, has been recognised with a Star Award.

An ‘amazing nurse’, who supports pregnant women and new mums with significant mental health difficulties on their road to recovery, has been praised for ‘exuding kindness, empathy and compassion’.

Rachael Walker, Charge Nurse at the Mother and Baby Unit at The Mount, is a Star Award winner and was nominated by colleagues for ‘always striving for the mothers and babies on the unit to receive the best care.’

Rachael has been employed by the Trust for 22 years and has been described as a role model by those who work with her.

She said: “The most rewarding part of my job is when the mums get better. When you see someone acutely unwell and are aware of the impact it has on families, it’s rewarding to be a part of their journey, helping them to become well again. When they leave, we find that a lot of the mums do come back and they do keep in touch, perhaps taking on a volunteer role to support new mums coming into the unit. This is invaluable.

“The team is amazing and when things are tough on the ward, everyone is remarkable. We pull together and support each other and I feel that the mums who come on to the ward do get the best care.”

The Trust’s Star Awards, or Staff/Team Achievement Recognition Scheme, provides us with the opportunity to celebrate the valuable contribution made by our employees and teams. It also enables us to publicly acknowledge both the individuals and groups who embody the Trust’s values of integrity, simplicity and caring.

Rachael added: “I’m pretty overwhelmed to have received a Star Award. I’m passionate about working here and this is the icing on the cake.”
