Max is a Professor of Psychological Medicine & Occupational Psychiatry at the Leeds Institute of Health Sciences at the University of Leeds. He was previously a consultant liaison psychiatrist and Senior Clinical Lead for Research & Development in the Trust.

Max is interested in the overlap between physical health and mental health in areas such as musculoskeletal disorders & palliative care. He has particular expertise in aspects of mental health and employment. His PhD examined life course risk factors for long term sickness absence. He has published over 100 papers and book chapters. Max has advised the Dept of Health, Dept for Work & Pensions, Public Health England and the Chief Medical Officer. He sits on the Industrial Injuries Advisory Council, which advises the DWP.
