DIAMONDS - Improving diabetes self-management for people with severe mental illness

What is the study about?
This study aims to investigate the clinical and cost-effectiveness of the DIAMONDS intervention, which is a one to one self-management programme for people with type 2 diabetes and serious mental illness.

Who can take part?
The participant will be:

  • Over 18 years old – Living in the community
  • Have a mental health diagnosis of severe depression, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder or psychosis.
  • Have a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes

The participant will not:

  • Have type 1 diabetes, gestational diabetes or diabetes due to genetic defect or secondary to pancreatitis or endocrine conditions.
  • Have a personality disorder, anxiety disorder, eating disorder or other mental health problem which is not listed as an included mental health diagnosis.
  • Have a cognitive impairment
  • Lack capacity to consent

What is involved?
Half of those taking part in the study will be enrolled on the self-management programme and half will continue their usual care. Those on the programme will be allocated a coach for 1-1 sessions for up to 6 months. Sessions can be weekly, or less frequently if the participant chooses, will usually last 30-60 minutes and can be in person or by phone or video call. They will be given a workbook and offered an app to work through physical or mental health goals of their choosing. All participants will meet with a researcher at the beginning of the study and again after 6 and 12 months to complete a series of questionnaires and to provide some physical health measures including a blood sample. Participants are offered shopping vouchers for completing the 6 & 12 month appointments.
