What is an eating disorder?
Eating disorders are serious mental illnesses which involve concern with eating, weight and/or shape. They are connected to behaviours, thoughts and feelings around food, not just eating, and impact both your emotional and physical health. They can affect any person regardless of gender, age, ethnicity etc.
You may hear different phrases used including ‘eating disorder’ or ‘disordered eating’. The difference between these is as follows:
Eating Disorder refers to someone having a diagnosis of a particular eating difficulty
Disordered eating refers to someone having experience or symptoms of eating difficulties, without a diagnosis.
