Crisis mental health support through NHS 111
Access to local mental health crisis services for the public in West Yorkshire via NHS 111 came into force from 8 May 2024.
The NHS 111 number is being rolled out across England as a universal point of access for people experiencing mental health crisis, ensuring that anyone can call NHS 111 for themselves or someone else and have 24/7 access to the mental health support they need in the community.
Changes for the public
Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust’s Single Point of Access (SPA) phone number (0800 183 1485) is no longer an option for members of the public to self-refer to our crisis services. Callers are asked to redial 111 to get the help they need, providing timely access to the right mental health support which meets their needs from LYPFT and others.
Specially trained mental health staff will speak to callers, discuss their urgent needs, and assess the best way to support them. Callers will be assessed, triaged, and referred to services including crisis services provided by LYPFT where needed.
GPs and Primary Care Colleagues
The SPA number is still available to GPs and other health and care professionals making urgent referrals.
They can still speak to a member of our Crisis Resolution Service by calling 0800 183 1485. This number operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
All members of the public who call 111 will pass through the Interactive Voice Recording (IVR). Anyone calling from Leeds will be patched through to the West Yorkshire Mental Health Helpline who will then speak to the caller.
They will:
- Provide emotional support,
- Triage need – if face to face assessment within 4hrs is needed they will instruct Crisis Resolution to provide this,
- If referral to any other non-urgent service is needed they will complete the SPA referral form available on the LYPFT website and send it to the LYPFT referrals inbox (managed by SPA administrators).
