Trust's charity sends computers to Zambia

 Chainama Hospital

22 July 2009

Action Zambia, the charity supported by Leeds Partnerships NHS Foundation Trust are delighted that 12 computers they donated have reached the Chainama College Hospital in Zambia.

Action Zambia is an initiative to support positive mental health in Zambia, one of the world’s poorest countries. Leeds Partnerships NHS Foundation Trust has undertaken to support the development of mental health services at the Chainama Hills Hospital with staff raising money and donating equipment to the hospital and number of Trust staff visiting in June 2008.

Since being sent in November 2008 and after months of travelling  by road, sea and rail the computers along with medical and physiotherapy equipment donated by the Leeds Met Physiotherapy team, reconditioned computers from the central university stores and hundreds of health related books finally arrived at the hospital.

Ethel Banda from Chainama College Hospital gave her thoughts on the arrival of the container:

“It was a great and joyful moment when the cargo from our partners in health, LeedsMetropolitanUniversity and Leeds Partnerships NHS Foundation Trust, arrived at ChainamaCollegeHospital. It was not only a joyous moment for the hospital staff but for the patients as well. This was evidenced by the fact that the patients themselves were the ones who offloaded the goods from the delivery vehicle into the store room!"
